alternative process post

I anticipated on exploring the interaction of chemicals of Cyaotype and VanDyke Brown combined processes, but my interest gravitated toward lumen prints over the past week. I complete the curve assignment, did a couple cyanotype photograms, and used Pictorico film in all processes. I kept going back to lumen printing, which surprised me since last year I couple seem to figure them out. I made simple photograms and chemi-grams to understand the interactions of chemicals, process order, and structure of the materials involved.
These prints launched me into my project focus:
I want to make multiple lumen prints using both photogram, chemi-gram, and pictorico negatives as image content while also cutting the paper or using multiple pieces of photo paper to construct a grid pattern and collage the completed lumen prints into one object. I have done two versions: one chemigram in a 3x3 grid cut FB paper and a 2x2 grid of 4x5 RC paper. I plan to collage and construct lumen prints and allow them to have more weight; I imagine the weight and density and possibly presence of the work be illuminated by assembling a book form, or using a  frame/matting presentation. Once the images are being laid out I am going to use the lengthy exposure time to formulate my next move and be ready to assemble after processing. I would like to accomplish 3-5 finished pieces, with at least 3 of them be new work. I would like to make this small collection of Lumen print work to add breadth in my work and continue considering after processing presentation and formatting.

For my final project, I want to continue my exploration between different types of materials by focusing on the relationship between material and subject. In my past work, I was mainly interested in the interaction between mediums and studied this through combining family artifacts in order to create various family narratives. Unfortunately, my collection of family mementos is disappearing, so it is time to make my own. In this project, I want to recreate 3 family photos that I would like to use in a piece, but are too precious and fragile to touch. By combining modern digital and the archaic van dyke processes, I hope to reproduce these photos so that they are more durable, but the process still matches the time they are from.

Jones Final Work

Since it has been half a term already, I have an inkling for my final project: While I would like to experiment with large 8x10 negatives utilizing all three types of processes based on our curves work, I have to balance this with producing as much collodian work as I can.Of course the exercise demonstrated one essential for the final: the best result may not come form the expected curve. I also admire an idea that was demonstrated in the  the class of combining the van Dyke process with a cyanotype overlay. I would like to use this idea (whilst being careful about my brushes!) to produce a consistent body of smaller landscape images (4x5), with brushed borders. These negatives would be based on analog and digital production methods including pictorico, ortho litho film, and maybe a few "normal" negatives. This would also facilitate my wish to gain a better understanding of the qualities of ortho litho film for future projects. Plus, that way I can refine my coating and brushing technique. Finally, I have an inkling that these materials could be included in a book that would be partially handmade with the original prints.

Cyanotype

I am wanting to experiment with Pinhole cameras, but one project I want to work with for my final is to cross cyanotype and Van Dyke brown on the same image, the purpose for this is to use cyanotype to cover the figure of my work, then I would coat a specific area of the body of the figure with a poem or phrase with the van dyke brown chemical process.

I want to use the chemistry almost like a reaction with painting on canvas but it is a photographic print.

James Coulter Final

My final project is going to be continuing with what I have been using as my tests for all the different types. I have gone out and photographed some new material and baised on my results with the tests, I have made the image very contrasty to go along with the subject matter. I believe that Cyan or VanDike will give me the best result for what I am trying to achive. I am planing on creating one image that is 17"x 22" with perfect exposure time shown by the scale chart. I am trying to go for a very rich in contrast, hard lined, aggressive image that really captures the edginess of the subject but also has a goo rich tone of value.

In considering the application of these practices in my practice, I am drawn to their potential application as surface. Much of my recent work has dealt with surface in one way or another, and the methods used in this class all offer new potential for surface. If possible, I'd like to attempt a series of emulsion lifts, using mordancage, exploring the surface of the prints. If the continued difficulty of finding some chemistry continues, I'll continue to explore this theme of surface, albeit through tintypes, using some older negatives of modernist buildings.
